F1 2024 Insider's Guide No. 15 – Netherlands

Racing now resumes after the Formula One® summer break, and up next is the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort where Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso are eager to jump back behind the wheel and hit the track.  

The seaside circuit is known as a classic race venue, one that was off the calendar until its triumphant return in 2021. In addition to high-speed corners, Zandvoort is renowned for its many packed grandstands, which provide an unparalleled atmosphere for watching the race. It’s also a party hotspot, with Armin Van Buuren spinning records this year. Located in close proximity to the beach and the thrills of Amsterdam, it’s an unmissable experience. 

Amsterdam’s carefree canals

Enjoying the water – The canals of the Netherlands are truly picturesque and appear as though they were specifically designed for cruising, staying alongside, or even swimming in. The Sofitel Legend Grand is situated between two canals and boasts a great bar, restaurant, and elegantly refurbished rooms. Keep it hip – De Durgerdam is an idyllic spot for couples seeking a romantic weekend. Nestled by a lake, this former fisherman’s inn boasts arresting interiors reminiscent of Soho House, blending vintage chic with boho vibes. Don’t miss the exquisite De Mark restaurant for dinner. Amsterdam Noord, not far from the village of De Durgerdam, features the new Tribe Hotel—a haven for hipsters—conveniently located next to the Metro line into Amsterdam Central. And when it comes to dining, make sure to visit Cornerstore—an exceptional small plates eatery housed in an old docklands warehouse. As you savour your hearty meal, enjoy the ambiance created by their extensive collection of vinyl records. Lastly, consider checking out the transformed old newspaper office, now the bar and hotel INK. 

How to take joy in the journey?

Cycle south – The Netherlands is a haven for cyclists. Explore the picturesque flat countryside as you journey south to Rotterdam, the country’s second city. Rotterdam buzzes with multiculturalism, vibrant parties, music, and intriguing architecture set against the backdrop of former docks. Morgan & Mees stands out with its high-class, dimly lit style. Meanwhile, The Usual boasts a massive open-plan space for dining, drinking, and coworking, all with a strong focus on sustainability. Head east to Eindhoven—a post-industrial student town known for its modern art and architecture. Don’t miss the HQ of renowned Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek, a delightful spot where you can enjoy drinks, meals, shopping, and even stay overnight. Where to go next?

Oslo and Stockholm – Norway’s cool capital offers plenty of thrills, from the new Munch Museum to the startling Opera House which seems to be sliding into the cool waters of Oslo Fjord and on whose roof you can walk. The Thief is an ultra-hip melange of restaurant, bar, rooftop and boutique rooms for the cognoscenti on a coastal promontory. It should not be missed. In the Swedish capital check out the brutalist TV Tower and the many museums and hip bars of Sodermalm. At Six is a modernist gem of a place in the centre of the city with slick, dark interiors straight out of a fashion shoot.
