Postcards from… Central Asia

In our ‘Postcards from…’ series, we invite intrepid travellers and creatives to share their experiences from some of the world’s most fascinating destinations. This time, we venture into the heart of Central Asia with Michael Shum, Partner at Globe-Trotter Hong Kong.

A vast and enigmatic region, Central Asia is home to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Once the crossroads of the ancient Silk Road, it remains a land of extraordinary landscapes and architectural wonders, where history and adventure intertwine at every turn.

Michael’s journey through Central Asia began with an unforgettable drive along the legendary Pamir Highway, a route carved through some of the world’s most dramatic mountain landscapes. As the road unfolded, he found himself immersed in scenes of nomadic life—families travelling with their herds along the strikingly blue waters of Song-Kul, Kyrgyzstan.

“Waking up in a yurt and stepping outside to witness this way of life was a true luxury,” Michael reflects, capturing the essence of an experience where simplicity and vast natural beauty converge.

One of the defining moments of Michael’s journey was navigating the legendary M41 Pamir Highway, a route renowned for its breathtaking mountain passes, rugged terrain, and untouched remoteness. Built during the Soviet era, the road remains largely unchanged, winding through the dramatic landscapes of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. At certain points, it skirts the border of Afghanistan, where Taliban soldiers could be seen patrolling just across the river—a stark reminder of the region’s complex history.

But the true adventure lay beyond the drive. A roadblock on the M41 led to an unplanned overnight stay in a remote village with no electricity—what Michael describes as "one of the darkest places I have ever been," lit only by flickering wood fires and faint solar lamps. Despite their limited resources, the villagers extended a warm welcome, preparing a meal from what little they had. Under a sky so clear that the Milky Way stretched endlessly overhead, conversations carried late into the night, turning an unexpected detour into one of the journey’s most memorable experiences.

Crossing borders, however, presented its own set of challenges. Moving between four countries required patience, preparation, and at times, endurance. Entering China proved to be the most difficult—after a delay, Michael and his group were left waiting for twelve hours at 4,200 meters above sea level, where the high altitude soon took its toll, requiring medical attention for some.

For those visiting Central Asia for the first time, Michael recommends Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Once a key stop along the Silk Road, the UNESCO-listed city is home to architectural wonders like the Kalyan Minaret and the Ark Fortress, reflecting centuries of Persian, Turkish, and Mongol influences. Wandering its ancient streets is like stepping back in time.

Preparation was key for a journey of this scale. A well-stocked medical kit was essential, as was ensuring the vehicle was equipped for the unpredictable roads ahead. Michael travelled with his custom Globe-Trotter Original 4-wheel luggage, perfectly designed to stack neatly in the trunk of his Land Rover Defender. Its lightweight yet durable design made it an ideal companion for a journey defined by both challenge and discovery.
